From Carbon To Silicon, and beyond | 45 years of marine propulsion engineering

Frequently Asked Questions.

The Basics

What does "From Carbon to Silicon" mean for Mencast Marine?+
It's our shift from traditional foundry-based, carbon-intensive manufacturing to digital-first processes powered by AI, computational simulation and additive manufacturing. It lets us design and build propellers that are smarter, greener and more efficient - without losing the craftsmanship our customers have trusted for 45 years.
Can you design for my specific vessel type?+
Yes. Our design system takes in your hull form, speed range, draft, engine and gearbox specifications and real operating profile to produce a propeller tailored to your vessel - not a catalogue part.
What is Meridian?+
Meridian is our next-generation marine propulsion system - a matched propeller and rudder line - engineered with AI-assisted design and advanced manufacturing. It's where the "Carbon to Silicon" approach becomes a product you can specify for your vessel.

What You Get

How does this benefit me as a shipowner or shipbuilder?+
Concretely: propellers optimised for your exact vessel profile; lower fuel consumption and operating cost; improved thrust with less cavitation and vibration; faster design-to-delivery; and less material waste.
Will these new technologies cost more?+
Initial unit cost can vary, but total cost of ownership is typically lower - through reduced fuel use over the propeller's life, lower maintenance via predictive servicing, and less downtime from faster delivery.
How does this support my environmental goals?+
By raising propulsion efficiency and cutting material waste, we help lower fuel consumption and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions across the asset's life.

Can You Trust It

Are AI-designed and AM-produced propellers as reliable as traditionally made ones?+
Yes. Every propeller goes through simulation, inspection and testing to meet or exceed classification requirements, and is engineered for greater precision, consistency and durability than casting allows. Our additively manufactured marine propeller was among the first of its kind certified by Lloyd's Register and qualified by ABS.
How do you actually prove a fuel saving?+
We independently quantify and validate the fuel and emissions savings your propulsion delivers, turning a claimed figure into a defensible, contract-grade number a charterer, owner or financier can rely on rather than take on trust. This is our most mature verification capability today.
What is the Digital Product Passport?+
A portable, standardised record of an asset's verified performance, history and certification that travels with it across owners, ports and jurisdictions. We are setting this up now so proof stays attached to the asset for its whole life, rather than scattered across reports.
What is the Verification & Certification Centre?+
An independent centre we are establishing, anchored in Singapore, to hold the standards, verification and certification behind marine performance claims - so a claim can be checked once, to a common standard, and trusted everywhere.
What exactly is certified, and by whom?+
The additively manufactured marine propeller was among the first of its kind certified by Lloyd's Register, which issued a Certificate for Propeller, and qualified by ABS for the additive manufacturing process. Fuel-saving figures are independently verified by Mencast today; wider performance certification to a common standard is what the Verification & Certification Centre is being established to provide. We keep "certified" and "qualified" distinct, so it is always clear which applies to what.

How It Works

What is additive manufacturing, and why use it for propellers?+
AM builds components layer by layer instead of casting them in moulds. For propellers that means freedom to create complex, optimised blade geometries; stronger, lighter designs; far less raw-material waste; and faster prototyping and production.
How does AI improve propeller design?+
We pair decades of real-world design data with AI-driven optimisation and generative design. AI lets us explore far more design options in less time, balance multiple performance factors in a single run, predict hydrodynamic performance before cutting metal, and reduce costly trial and error.

After You Buy

How will this affect after-sales service?+
We are building a digital service and remanufacturing capability, with a digital twin for every propeller and stern gear we make, repair or remanufacture. Each twin carries the asset's Digital Product Passport - performance, maintenance history and modifications from commissioning onward - enabling proactive maintenance, faster troubleshooting, re-verification when a part returns from service, and longer service life.
What lead times can we expect?+
Lead times depend on whether it's a new build or a repair and remanufacture, and on part complexity. AI-assisted design and additive manufacturing shorten the design-to-delivery cycle compared with traditional casting. For an indicative schedule, send us your vessel and part details and we'll assess and come back with a timeline.
How do I request a quote or send a propeller for assessment?+
Talk to us with your vessel details or the component you'd like assessed - hull form, speed range, operating profile, and the propeller or stern gear in question - and we'll advise on design, new build, or repair and remanufacture. Call +65 6268 4155 or email salesadmin@mencast.com.sg.

What's Next

What's next for Mencast Marine?+
Over the next five years we plan to expand our Lighthouse Factory for propeller AM and robotic post-processing, scale to a distributed manufacturing network with partners worldwide, stand up our Verification & Certification Centre, and grow from a propeller manufacturer into a design, toolpath and process company delivering marine propulsion globally.
